Some of you know today as π-day.

But the real insiders know that today is the 30th anniversary of the 1.0 release of Linux.

@torvalds congratulations. How does it feel to maintain one of the most important software parts of modern civilization?

@torvalds Thanks so much for all that work. I first ran Linux before that, in early 1993.

@torvalds Not bad for something that is just a hobby, nothing as big or professional as GNU.

@torvalds

But 3/14 is π-day, isn't it?

Yeah, I'm an insider 😁 Happy birthday Linux and thank your father for your birth 🥳

@torvalds I've always considered myself late to the game. But looking back now, the perspective seems different. I started with a November 1995 SuSE using a 1.2.13 Kernel. Suddenly I feel old.😔

Since the earth has been known to be well approximated by a ball, the concept of "today" has become more complicated than one would wish.

Iirc, you were based in Finland when releasing Linux 1.0. From the point of view of that part of the world, you posted this anniversary toot on March 15.

Personally, I booted Linux for the first time Feb 6, 1994 and have been a user (and promoter, in my small way) of Linux continously ever since that year. So a big thank you 😍!

@torvalds an amazing achievement for sure, but also somehow absurd to think that none of these big operating systems existed at all such a short time ago.

@torvalds Congratulations. Pi day has the catchier name, though.

@torvalds It takes an extreme outsider to know it is the anniversary of the announcement of the PDP-6 computer.

@rye @torvalds I am this oddly specific about it, cause we are the kind of people to make a worship day out of it.

I guess it"s up to us to port Linux to the PDP-6!

@torvalds
Only TIL the date of this historically important date. The only other dates I have noted was the date of the public announcement and the initial release of Linux. But I feel this date is even more important the 1.0.0 version needs some love and deserves to be celebrated 😍️🥰️.
🎉️🎂️🎁️ Happy anniversary‼️

@torvalds :( I feel old now. I remember compiling 0.99, dd-ing it to a floppy, trying to boot it, and it panicing because I'd forgotten to include math copro emulation on a 386SX. Start the build process again, only to end up with an image that didn't fit on a 1.44Mb floppy.

@torvalds My first contact with Linux was sometime in 1992. I think it was the first half of the year. The version was something around 0.7x as far as I remember. Maybe a bit earlier version. I downloaded it an 5,25“ floppies in the university and installed it on my AMD 386DX40.
Since around 25 years now I’m mainly using windows. Especially because I used my PC for gaming.
But these times are over and I start thinking about Linux again. Just don’t know which distribution to use

@torvalds

I first used Linux when a student loaned me a Red Hat 3.0.3 CD - version released 1 May 1996 according to Wikipedia - and I booted it and was soon able to get it doing useful stuff in text mode, including running some of my shell scripts developed on Solaris.

Have made much use of it since on all classes of device from embedded routers to NAS, to desktops/laptops, mobile phones and cloud servers.

@dougmerritt @torvalds Or... stay with me now... port ITS to something like RISC-V?

Maybe with a slight architectural variation; battle cry: "72 bits oughta be enough for anyone!"

@simonzerafa @torvalds @geerlingguy Tau Day on 6/28, about a month from now. Pi approximation day on 22/7, a few weeks after that. We have your mathematical holidays covered! Less than ten months to Half Tau Day.

@soaproot @torvalds @geerlingguy

Indeed cold medications affects my ability to distinguish 5/28 from 6/28 😵‍💫

Thanks for the correction 🙂👍
