**now I need to find a frequency counter so I can adjust the tones. I probably have one, lol, just need to find it. Android spectrum analyzer app says it's way off though, so I might need to replace some components so it will generate tones in the right area (capacitors? resistors? something has drifted).

Took it apart, thought I'd have to recap it, but someone already did that in the last 10 years. Transmit was not working, but....

The fix was easy! Apparently the microphone on these is powered by a 9V battery. Annoying, but easy fix.

Here's a photo of Mr. Filer (WA6WWC) from the Thousand Oaks Library! Look at that antenna he's got, lol. Apparently this radio hasn't moved very far... I don't know how I ended up with it. 🤔

Hmm, he may still be alive (though there's an obit for his wife). Patent on programmable underwater acoustic beacon. Which explains why the construction of the Heathkit is EXTREMELY clean (I mean, better job than I would have been able to do, lol). Anyway, Armand, thanks for the (working) radio!

@ai6yr 146.520 seems to be on the wane for some reason. I often monitor it when driving long distances and used to hear the odd mobile or POTA station, but very rarely in the past year or so.
