Oh hey, the conspiracy theorists are slowly spreading to @LWN too (cc @corbet)
Unsurprisingly it's the same guy who was fired from Google Zürich like 5+ years ago for being a racist/sexist asshole. You can check his website for some receipts, he's not particularly stealthy about it: https://rudd-o.com/
But hey he's being a racist while using only nice words so it's fine I guess!
Kind of emphasizes @marcan's recent point (https://social.treehouse.systems/@marcan/110292225657380887) when I look at an unhinged comment online and I can often recognize the name of the author. There aren't a ton of these people posting unhinged stuff online, they're just very loud, they spread very wide, and moderators don't do a good job at stopping them early.
@corbet @LWN Thanks for the reply and the perspective. I very much empathize, it's especially hard to figure out the line when those folks have trained themselves to look as reasonable as possible when supporting horrible ideologies.
That comment I linked is basically saying "I'm happy I can now generate hate speech with LLMs" without explicitly saying it...
@delroth I can't tell: is that an article or a comment on an article? I was thinking of re-subbing to LWN but I don't really want to pay for...that
@Sinjo comment on an article
@corbet @LWN @delroth tbh I'm with Pierre here that they at least _seem_ to be getting louder on LWN compared to the past.
I mean, the "systemd wars" were bad, but I hadn't read anyone suggesting that the whole Gentoo development team is a far right organization until last year 🙄
(Not criticizing your moderation choices, just taking stock of how it looks like from the outside looking in.)
@delroth okay that's good at least
@Sinjo also FWIW I would still recommend an LWN subscription, even with my worries about the moderation issues I'm pointing out.
It's very high quality reporting on a niche topic, and I'm happy to try and encourage that. Also very customer friendly with the pricing and being able to share subscriber links to articles.
(They do company subscriptions too, maybe consider getting your employer to do that? I was on Google's plan until they kicked me out a few months ago, now I pay for it myself :p)
The thing is, if you suppress comments like that, then you may think that people like that aren't out there, and that they won't use these systems in that way.This is a devastating truth.
