Future versions of #OpenWrt will have #MPTCP support available by default, ready to be used for handover and link aggregation features!

https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/16786

mptcpd and mptcpize will also be available in the official repositories!

@mptcp I don't think mptcp needs router support, so while I am thrilled it is on, and probably should some embedded/iot uses of openwrt benefit, I don't see why it helps the average router.

@mcr314 @mptcp IIUC, with this, an operator of a multihomed router has the option to add MPTCP on the router when the hosts downstream it do not start it.
Thus, the hosts get stable (or even trunked) connectivity to MPTCP servers without the need to configure it there.

@chrysn @mcr314 @mptcp yes, that's correct. People have used a transparent TCP to MPTCP proxy, running on an router and paired with an MPTCP proxy server elsewhere on the Internet, to be able to use multiple links at the same time.

Because MPTCP was not available on OpenWrt by default, there were some projects like Open MPTCP Router packaging everything to serve this use-case: https://www.openmptcprouter.com

@matttbe @mcr314 @mptcp Are MPTCP servers becoming widespread enough that such a setup can make sense even without a server proxy? Some rural places in Austria have the choice between slow but reliable dialup and fast but intermittent cellular service -- and running a proxy host is not exactly something the ISPs offer.

@chrysn @mcr314 @mptcp I don't think we are there yet.

I think the situation you described is similar in many rural areas. Some ISP are using MPTCP to get a better connectivity, but not in Austria I think.
