So of course they have to make an electric vehicle with a 128dB noise generator... And of course they screw it up. Sometimes I think there is no hope for the human race.

@corbet think of all the poor drivers who were unwittingly emasculated by this travesty

@tobinbaker @corbet I was under the perhaps mistaken impression that EVs were mandated to make NOISE in the USA, presumably a 50/50 tradeoff between it being un-american to have a quiet road, and some vague nod towards safety. (ofc this is beside the point of whether the noise is the correct noise, you wouldn't want an expensive car to sound like a cheap car! gasp)

@dotstdy @corbet I don’t have an EV but have owned several Prii and they only make noise in reverse when in EV mode

@corbet it looks like every single one of that series is affected 🤦

“What’s more, the recall’s “suspect period” reportedly begins on 30APR2024, when the first 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona was produced, and ends 18MAR2025 … when the last Charger EV was produced.”

@dotstdy @tobinbaker They have to make a low level of noise (not 128dB!) when moving slowly. Our Bolt has a device we call the "coffee grinder" that kicks in below around 20mph. Its purpose is to ensure that pedestrians know you're there, rather than to make up for unrelated anatomical problems.

@corbet maybe many someones on the project objected to the ridiculous noise and looked the other way that it wasn't enabled?
