@corbet the galling entitlement suffusing that letter & the voting record of the people who signed it aside, they do have a point. The Canadian provinces have not been sufficiently funding prevention and containment priorities. (Opinion: mostly because the provincial governments tend to be from the side of the aisle that profits from denying climate change and encouraging resource extraction.)
We really should be doing more, for our duty to ourselves as well as for neighborliness. It's fair.
@gnomon @corbet NDP (left leaning) have cut firefighting budgets too in Alberta and likely elsewhere. Budget is only a small factor. The issue is complex, and increased by climate change. It’s hard to mitigate migrating tree infestations and hot dry weather. Many fires are in extremely remote regions. I lack expertise, but it seems like there is little that could be different.
