@corbet I think we have a closed loop - investors expect ai for growth, so all companies have to go hard on it, which puts pressure on politicians, and all this cycle providing a form of 'growth' and nobody is thinking about whether any of it makes any sense.

Any bells ringing that sound 2008-ish at all?

@ljs @corbet When this all crashes down (when, not if) I think it's going to make 2008 look like a walk in the park with puppies and ice cream. The big tech companies that have been chasing AI as the Next Big Thing will cut employees by the tens of thousands while the C-level folks leading this boondoggle will keep their jobs and eight-figure bonuses.

@corbet Also, you can be sure the data center will be located in some poor area of town where the locals have almost no political power and will have to put up with the negative effects of a huge DC with no recourse... kind of like this:
