The register with one of the worst takes I have ever seen, fucking morons

@ljs interesting how some people forget that open source is about people, and working together and respectful is a must in a open source project. The only person that seems to not care about its users is Kent, who is doing everything he can to piss everybody, making it impossible for working with him and thus not merging fixes for his "perfect" filesystem.

@mpdesouza yes, you're 100% right.

I really despise the 'personality clash' euphemism.

It's designed to deny somebody's behaviour and make a false equivalence.

It's a cowardly way of dealing with a situation like this also - and excuses this kind of behaviour.

What el reg might want to consider is that this is the first time in linux's entire history this has happened.

And he has no advocates among maintainers.

I mean could it be that everybody else is having a 'personality clash' or might there be something real?

Just a thoughtless stupid article.

@ljs The framing ("losing a feature") is especially bad. Bcachefs can always be distributed out of tree. Distros can always re-include it if they want (see also: secure boot). Linus isn't actually all-powerful, this is FOSS. If, on a "purely technical" basis, bcachefs is so superior, there are plenty of avenues for users to get it.

And for all the "context" the Reg provides about Ted & btrfs, they neglect to mention how the default Fedora install has used btrfs since v33! Not exactly unstable..

@brenns10 yes of course all that's true, it's just an awful misleading piece and very insulting to the people who've had to put up with this nonsense.

This is about the community saying it's not ok to be toxic and abusive.

What part of that is hard to understand?

If he did 1% of what matey did in his workplace he'd be fired.

Wonder if he'd call that a 'clash of personalities'.

@ljs Wow, they read those emails, and THAT was their takeaway? I... I don't know what to say...

@hcmh I usually ignore this kind of crap but saw this and broke my rule.

Reporting on kernel drama is really really bad, speaking as somebody who sees it from the inside + can compare to reported.

But this is next level.

Won't ever be reading that rag again

@ljs lol how embarrassing, they totally fell for the "technical argument" smokescreen. It's stupid to defend the technical points of Kent's replies in that thread, because the technical aspect was never the point.

And yet the "non-technical" aspects are just as important to Linux's technical excellence. I can't remember where I read that Linux's true innovation wasn't its design, but rather its development model, but it's true. Linux isn't defined by a single, great technical decision. Instead, it's great because it's constantly evolving through collaboration. Jeopardizing that is a much bigger deal than any single feature.

@osandov 100% spot on.

The guy obviously has a bone to pick with some past experience with btrfs, and is the target audience for Kent's bullshit, which I'm convinced is aimed at people who don't know better but want to feel clever.

Even the slightest bit of research would have helped here, I bet this guy read some bullshit from Kent and spent 10 minutes typing that up 'there done'.

The incredible arrogance to think that the all the people who've endlessly pushed back on Kent are just somehow all happening to have 'personality clashes' with him.

Astonishing really.

Trash outlet.

@lkundrak @pony reiser was never kicked out of the kernel for that btw so it sort of makes the point even more strongly lol.

This is the literal first time in linux history INCLUDING reiser this has ever happened...

@ljs @pony i'm also not sure where does the idea that bcachefs is going to be deleted come from

i'm not saying it's not going to happen, but i haven't seen linus or anybody relevant suggest that

@lkundrak @ljs @pony oh ok, the article doesn't cite that mail, or even doesn't seem to say the fs is going to be removed, apart from the title itself suggesting that.

@vbabka @ljs @pony it makes up for the lack of journalistic integrity by randomly shitting on devicemapper tho

@vbabka @lkundrak @pony citing anything or doing any research apart from 'read some kent rants' would be a little too much effort
