Something I've learnt in my career - if you're a coder and a colleague tells you something like 'why are you so bothered about the code nobody sees it it doesn't matter' etc.

They're just shit. 100%. They're just shit at what they do.

I won't go into the numerous counterarguments to that kind of attitude, or the fact that I've personally seen very clearly to what degree poor code does harm in enormously visible ways, because it's not necessary.

They're just shit.

@ljs In some cases, short term vs. long term viewpoint. Given a reasonably stable environment, long term normally wins.

But if, and only if, you survive the short term. ;-)

@paulmckrcu well having done the whole early stage startup thing I've seen this first hand and... I entirely retain the opinion stated here :)

Of course the nuanced point here is - everything is a compromise, and there is obviously such a thing as perfectionism.

But out and out pretending it doesn't matter is the tell! Or worse - genuinely believing that :)

@ljs Yes, it is necessary to make conscious and careful tradeoffs. Necessary, but not necessarily popular. Sound bites are much more fun, after all! ;-)
