@corbet I moved all my projects off GitHub quite a while ago when Microsoft's strategy for "monetizing" it became clear.
@corbet that’s fascinating. I wonder to what extent that’s because a lot of the AI org is ex-GH through Copilot.
@dfs_comedy @corbet I just deleted all of my repos on GitHub. There was nothing I need to keep or transfer.
@corbet probably also some accounting fun, GitHub might make some money so they can now prop up AI revenue with it
@corbet they do realize that Git is decentralized? People can just delete their stuff and push it some other git provider...
> The fact that it is being moved into Microsoft's AI operation,
The Verge added a correction -- this bit isn't recent news.
> Correction, August 11th: GitHub was already part of CoreAI, but its leadership will no longer be under a single CEO.
Does it seem interesting you the timing, @corbet?
Trump issues an executive order to keep “AI unregulated”, and within days, #Microsoft moves #GitHub under their AI division.
I don't think the resignation of the CEO is a timing coincidence.
@corbet I defected to #codeberg, and I am so happy. They are SO nice, and have set me up with their CI/CD stuff, it's just fabulous. And it sits behind iocaine or anubis...whichever one has the little anime girl to prevent code theft. And I'm an old FOSS fart, and I appreciate the hippy opensource environment it provides. Github is trash, and has been for a while.
@SecondUniverse @corbet you assume that deletion means what you think it means
@SecondUniverse @corbet true, but they could just pretend that they didn't because of an error - if they are ever caught
@corbet I really don't get the sudden hysteria. Github's been under Microsoft's AI division for a while now. And the CEO who's going out has always been extremely for AI. I don't get why the fact that Github soon won't have it's own CEO is somehow very impactful for the users. What actually changed?
