New level of irony -- an "IP reputation" company that has put one of our mail hosts on the "spam list" sends HTML-only mail that triggers a score of 10 from SpamAssassin.

Heh, and now I can't submit another removal request for the next 24 hours, even though I never received their spammy confirmation mail.

Please don't use cloudmark.com -- they are terrible at this.

@ljs It's just an illusion that mail is broken because it's the communication medium that's been the most abused for the past 40 years. Every other means of communication where you don't need prior opt-in is either already just as terrible, or will become just as terrible after a decade of spammer abuse.

@ljs ActivityPub, for example, is going to get just as bad as mail today, because it allows non-opt-in communication. If someone adds your AP instance to some kind of "fediblock list" out there, you'll never get it off either.

@ljs well, you can also buy a bunch of confirmed Instagram accounts for something like $0.03 a pop, so I doubt this will actually make any marked difference.

The (sad) truth is, for a decentralized non-opt-in communication platform, email is as good as it gets.

@ljs The important test is not just "how well does it work," but also "how well does it fail." We've not yet built a system for unrestricted global communication that fails as well as email.

@ljs Right, well, I'm afraid I'm not nearly as qualified to talk about systems of governance as I am about systems of delivering end-to-end messaging. ;)
