Is it normal these that BIOS updates on consumer motherboards wipe out all BIOS settings? I did a BIOS update on my Gigabyte motherboard and had to go back in and turn hardware virtualization back on.
@mcdanlj I've experienced the same more than once, FWIW.
@mcdanlj All too normal, yes. The driver for some of that getting fixed is the "System" requirements for the Windows logo program, which unfortunately consumer motherboards have no incentive to comply with. Though honestly the surprising part here is they actually produced a firmware update.
@mcdanlj Frequent occurence for me as well. My preferred workaround is to save settings to a file on the system EFI (fat) partition prior to flashing and then attempt to load that after the flash.
@ermo Huh. I had no idea that was a thing, but I see F3 / F4 bios profile save/restore in the manual, now that I know to look for it.
I only enabled SVM (virtualization) and disabled "Core Performance Boost" — probably easier to flip those two from the defaults than to navigate to a profile and restore it.
My system has been occasionally freezing up. Usually soon after boot; it would then run for days or weeks just fine. I put fresh thermal compound on wondering if it was overheating when booting, but that didn't fix it. After updating the BIOS and disabling Core Performance Boost (based on a recommendation I saw somewhere) it's been stable so far. 🤞
@hughsie @vathpela The system wasn't reliably staying up long enough to check whether it was on LVFS; it freezing was why I went to apply it. I guess since it has a backup bios that would have been OK.
And I see that https://fwupd.org/lvfs/search?value=gigabyte is quite barren; no Aolus Ultra X570 there. 😢
Haven't found an appropriate email address on the Gigabyte site. Happy to contribute to the flood of email requests to them, though!
