Cat poni, Whorseman of Apocalypse

also i have bought an online extra ticket because i was taking a train from beyond the civilized word and my transit pass validity, they work by having 20 minutes validity during which you can display a QR code in the app, but the conductor has only asked to check bit later, i told her that i cannot show her that ticket anymore and she was like, yeah, whatever, i don't care about it anymore anyway, just your transit pass, we're in prague now

why did i bother to buy that ticket

i mean, surely there must be some way to check the ticket in case the train is for example late?

@ignaloidas i mean it was 80 cents (~) and short of some payment processing fees, it all goes to the transit, so whatever, but like, it's weird?

@pony I mean, why even put a restriction on a QR code

like a 10 digit QR code is all you really need for ticketing purposes, if you’re not doing dum dum stuff and not checking those tickets in

@ignaloidas i don't know, it doesn't really make sense i cannot display the code after the ticket expires, the validity is part of it, there is no reason to restrict that

@pony yeah

that’s the thing confusing me the most

you can just get a pkpass or pdf here

like, try to make it as easy as possible to go through online stuff. because offline stuff costs more to keep

@ignaloidas i mean normally it's probably bit special with trains, a "normal" ticket inspector on a bus or in the metro would only care if the ticket is valid right now, but train conductors generally ask for tickets for the entire trip and they probably saw you boarding at non-prague stop, so that doesn't make much sense

there's also the delay situation, like if the train got stuck in some intermediate stop for 10 minutes or so, still not within my transit pass validity, and then i get asked for a ticket which is already expired, though not by my fault, it covered the trip

@pony The ticket checkers in Brussels local trains are also quite useless, they prefer hanging out in the (empty) first class area than checking tickets.

(Oh sorry, they also perform the very essential function of getting out at every stop, turning a key on the side of the platform and whistling to allow the train to depart. Some 19th century cosplay)

@DiegoBeghin czech railways conductors are quite active and they probably do reduce the fare evasion by a lot, though it's questionable if they really need to be there; they also act as a backup to sell tickets in so called "unattended" stations, which is kinda most of them (this kind of means i didn't *really* have to buy a ticket no matter what, you can always just ask the conductor to sell you one during the ticket check, you don't even need to actively look for them or anything, you just need to reply "i don't have a ticket, i want to buy it" when asked to present one)

however this logic oversight would probably be made even worse if it was a pure ticket inspector...

@pony Used to be like that in Belgium until they finally put vending machines at every station (plus there's the app).

Well the fine for not having a valid ticket is only like 12€ so might be worth it since the inspectors aren't that zealous on local trains.

@DiegoBeghin that's not really feasible with all the local lines where there often is nothing but a little mount of gravel imitating a platform, sometimes not even electricity (tho brno is trying to move towards conductor-less trains and they are, i believe, planning to have vending machines onboard?), though oddly enough the most local trains are often already driver-only, with the driver actually selling the tickets, like in a bus

ah and there are several public and private ticketing systems, every region has own, czech railways have own, but czech railways no longer operate all trains, there's a state system-wide ticket, but it lacks bus and other transit integration of regional ones...

@pony I've been on a bus going deep into the Geneva suburbs (French side) with a vending machine on board.

@DiegoBeghin we now have them on all urban buses, but then the bus tickets are not the most complicated thing, there's just like 3 or 4

@vbabka ok looks like you get some code, but it’s a very weird UI
