I think 85%* of my programming career has been doing things I don't want to be doing in order to pay the bills.

The coding tasks in that billable work is generally OK and I've all but eliminated the meetings, and other assorted BS but it's still less than ideal.

Coming to the conclusion that writing code is best left a hobby in order to really enjoy it.

*probably a low estimate.

@patrickmcconnell I feel incredibly, incredibly blessed to be in a position where I really love what I'm doing.

But this came from the other direction - turning my hobby into a job. It took a hell of a lot of effort to make it happen, however... but I mean if somehow it all fell apart (hopefully now v. unlikely), I'd just do it as a hobby again. The actual work won't stop.

I fully understand where you're coming from though and am aware of just how lucky I am :)
