I always love when people freak out that I run a mechanical hard drive as if this is some alien technology or a lost relic that hasn't been seen for millennia, especially when people freak out over me bringing up potential IO issues.

When KDE locked up the entire desktop using desktop effects it was an IO bug, I'm not sure with the COSMIC settings yet if it's a similar issue or just VM weirdness. But lets not pretend that software should lock up when running it with a mechanical hard drive.

Let me just clarify something, it's one thing if a video editor, game load screen, image transcoder, etc. locks up. This are systems using a lot of data. But a desktop is not that, and if it is it's 100% a bug, I'm not certain what the COSMIC cause is but I hope it's just the VM

@BrodieOnLinux I wonder how much of Internet is stored on spindles (a.k.a. hard disk drives) vs SSDs. Then there's LTO tapes for archival storage. Yes, tapes are not gone, they have the best byte-for-buck ratio, after you tank the initial cost of hardware to operate them.

@unfa @BrodieOnLinux Tapes are used also for enterprise long-term backup because of durability. Life-times span in the range of 30-50 years or similar figures (when stored in appropriate temperature range etc. conditions).
