My dream is that one day, game developers will open source their games after they reach the end of support.

@brainblasted We need a non-profit that buys up residual rights to games that are eoled and makes them open source.

@brainblasted I feel like a big impedance here* is that a lot of time times the code is lost

________
*other than the usual stuff with closed source software, such as patents, unclear copyright, and dubious licenses

@brainblasted sadly I think in a lot of cases this won't be entirely possible, as for example assets are usually purchased, so the copyright holder of the game cannot easily make the assets open source too, but would nee to ask the asset creator.

@c0debabe @brainblasted I have complicated feelings about John Carmack but at least id released the source for Doom and Quake.

I get the feeling that we'll never see the source code for DOOM 2016, though.

@brainblasted If we make it a 501(c)3 then US companies and individuals can take a charitable deduction if they sell the rights for below fair market value or gift them.

@brainblasted Heck, why limit it to games. Do it for other software too. The rights could be encumbered to limit them to non-commercial uses only, to avoid competing with the contributing company.

@brainblasted Iā€™m sure there must be a Creative Commons license for this purpose.

@brainblasted There should be law requiring that, actually. Copyright protects creators, but we should protect public domain, too.
