Was excited about this project/company but just an FYI for others following the space, founder's position on in his own words:
"i don't really care about stuff being foss"
Caring about stuff working and having a FOSS-only or a FOSS-first approach are not mutually exclusive, of course. Still hopeful though that they will benefit the ecosystem.

@islamicaudiobooks Function over FOSS is what he says. flx1 uses Halium, so his opinion is not really surprising to anyone I guess. But yeah I agree, fully open-source solutions would be better.

@islamicaudiobooks i was hoping for better news too, from . Maybe it will be possible to flash other Linux OSes on their FLX1?

@insl @islamicaudiobooks As long as FuriLabs keep their changes open (as they do as far as I can tell and should, to not violate copy-left licenses), this is okay, IMHO. If Bardia is, e.g., faster at editing an image with proprietary software and thus has more time left to spend on FuriOS or Droidian, this is not only pragmatic but also beneficial. A day only has 24 hours, and minus the time needed for meals and sleep, is quite short. Let's not be purists about aspects that don't really matter.

@linmob @insl @islamicaudiobooks Of course, Furilabs can do the minimum required by law, but what was the reason to care about their hardware? Fairphone is actually doing more than minimum required -- they are working on upstreaming their kernel changes, perhaps take that one, instead? Or PinePhone? Or Librem 5? Ore OnePlus 6 (where vendor did the minimum but community is doing lot more)?

@pavel
Yeah, I know. I think the selling point of FuriLabs is that they want to provide "Debian based mobile Linux, with all the features", hence shipping some Mediatek hardware with good Halium support. Do I prefer mainline? Absolutelty. But I think there are a number of users that just care that the stuff they expect works well enought (e.g., camera) and for that the Halium route is just so much more attractive.

@linmob @islamicaudiobooks @insl Ok, that's not unreasonable. For me, mainline is important, but ... yeah, Debian is nice. I actually run Droidian on op6, but I hope to switch to Mobian in future.
