The Watchy arrived today, significantly earlier than the ETA range that was provided!

Rather glad with spending a bit more to get it with a metal case, since it makes the watch feel a bit more premium; it might even be anodised aluminium? I know that E-Ink is renowned for crisp text, but I'm still surprised by how readable the tiniest text is on the watchface it came with (Starfield) without squinting. Can't wait to explore it further, try out various firmwares for it, and perhaps even create watchfaces for it!

@w8l Ooh can these be bought pre-assembled? I only seem to be able to find the plastic variant.

@aks I ordered a clone from AliExpress, but there are other sellers:

@aks Also apparently there is firmware with support for Android devices, alongside a companion app:

@w8l You may want to take a look at Bangle.js2 . Esp32 is not really a good base for smartwatch due to the power consumption. (And yes, I'd like to see good/open smartwatch software, and so far Espruino is best I found. It should be possible to get it to run on Esp, too :-) ).

@pavel
Unfortunately, that smartwatch does not have any cheap options due to my location.

@w8l I was able to pick it up personally at fosdem from the maintainer. I guess I was pretty lucky :-).
