I don’t know why ebooks and audiobooks have to necessarily be separate mediums. I enjoy listening to an audiobook while preoccupied with something else, but I wouldn’t mind being able to switch to the ebook - synced exactly to where I stopped listening - when I want some quiet time. At least audiobook -> ebook is doable, but going back is just a complete nightmare. If only audiobooks had a handy transcript embedded…

Some proprietary ebook/audiobook combinations support this (and have the ebook show a moving highlight of the bit of the audiobook being read). I wish Open Source formats supported this.

@maxine There's a format intended for blind people called DAISY, which can incorporate audio and text in a synchronised way. Unfortunately it's very niche and doesn't really get used by sighted people, I think.

@josh I would assume this is achievable with an embedded lrc - while it doesn’t do much for rich formatting, it would at least allow enough to timestamp paragraphs as needed.

I generally assumed the issue is licensing an ebook and audiobook are different mediums. Do you know which retailers using which formats support this?

Amazon supports it for some combinations of Kindle ebooks and Audible audiobooks, but oddly, *not* on a Kindle device, only on a non-Kindle device running the Kindle app.

OK, good because I've been wondering this sometimes.

I also wonder if customer service knows this:

1. https://amazonforum.my.site.com/s/question/0D56Q0000DFHPH0SQP/audiobook-no-longer-running-in-kindle-app
2. https://uk.amazonforum.com/s/question/0D56Q0000B7awIkSQI/unable-to-download-audiobook-title-on-kindle-paperwhite-and-kindle-app

Bunch of hits can be found where it is not clearly stated that "no it does not and will not work on the Kindle device." At most you have to be able to read it in-between the lines. I had my first Kindle device in 2010 or 2011 and I have faint memory that it could at least text-to-speech books but have not been able to find that option either in my current Kindle...
