Except you control their ability to evade paying taxes, don’t you Adam?

@grrlscientist Unless we get our act together immediately, Capitalism is the monster that will devour us. Not a secret, but for those of us in a position to make such a change, the shiny baubles are too sparkly to resist. We won’t change without being forced to. 🤔

@grrlscientist

billionaires shouldn't exist. I mean even 100m is ridiculous. but I'd rather we break up companies and establish platform coops such that we don't have to tax them that much. make the industries so competitive that they have to pay more and provide better benefits.

@grrlscientist I think we can absolutely 100% do both, but the real problem is we're not doing either right because in each case the focus keeps ending up being about money in all the wrong ways and no small part of that problem is, indeed, the billionaires.

»Taxing Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos at the top marginal tax rates from the 1960s could indeed generate sufficient revenue, exceeding $250 billion, with a potential total of approximately $483.7 billion [i.e. for another Apollo program and a lot more] based on their current net worths.«

@Doreen32128 @grrlscientist churches need to be prompted a choice be open about finances like all other non profits or be for profit and pay taxes I find it crazy that they are allowed to hide finances and not pay taxes that's like a goldmine for corruption

@grrlscientist That's never going to happen, given how they treat their own employees (mass layoffs etc.). Growth isn't even enough anymore. It has to be more growth each year, so that the shareholders are happy.

@EmpressKaede @grrlscientist but Bezos money came largely from Amazon directly and indirectly (by selling stocks). Also Bezos controlled Amazon for a long time and is Chairman of Amazon. Also it is strange that this becomes a topic now, where the issue was brewing for decades.

@prefec2 @grrlscientist bezos is kore disconnected from Amazon then anything and remember Amazon looses money on selling stuff only AWS is profitable not much we can do to pressure them

@grrlscientist I think one thing that we should invest more money in space is asteroid mining. https://www.wired.com/story/things-are-looking-up-for-asteroid-mining/

@grrlscientist Doing stuff in space is crucial for civilization. It has provided us eg microprocessors and microwave ovens 🙂 It is the thing that drives innovation other than war industry.

@grrlscientist We could also argue eg ”why sponsor basic research which does not lead immediate results and not instead resolve poverty”. I consider that take as classic populism. Money by itself solves nothing. Working economy and innovation does because it has actual value. Cash is more like microscale debt with time dependent value.
