@Foxboron Is this about the subtitles feature? I don’t see anything wrong with it if it is all done on device.

@jeisom @Foxboron the wrong is AI, device or not. We never asked for that. It's just mindless hype. If some people still want it, then it should just be a separate plugin, so we can entirely ignore it if we dont want it. Thats what plugins are for.

@jeisom

It's a bit of social commentary on the AI marketing, really.

@f4grx @jeisom @Foxboron The problem here is that generative AI (makes slop, is bad for artists, etc) and cloud-based AI (uses massive amounts of energy) are creating this kind of blowback for local-only, potentially-useful features if the term "AI" is used anywhere

@tomw @jeisom @Foxboron even basic uses of machine learning, like speech codecs, will fail in spectacular ways when presented with unexpected inputs.

@Foxboron ... which can be disabled from the settings. I don't want to use it either but it is not like the first feature ever that I dislike :-) So yeah I do agree that AI crap sucks but I don't see this VLC feature as such a big deal.

I still use Audacity too...
