Okay. Hear me out. But what has AI or GenAI *genuinely* made better?

I'll concede translations and even some brainstorming.

But where has it enabled us to do things that we couldn't do before?

I don't mean "cheaper and worse replacement for a human", but, like, genuinely make humanity better off.

(Also, I refer to the common use of "AI"; I know that ML runs circles around humans for complex optimization problems.)

@larsmb

Also, "cheaper" [citation-needed]

OpenAI is promising "PhD level" assistants for $20k/month

I know a lot of PhDs who would be delighted to accept half that

@trochee The support chatbots are cheaper than scripted humans (and worse).
So there's clearly some incentives for for profit enterprises with low standards.

@larsmb @trochee The total cost of chatbots is debatable. Unlike humans, they cannot be held accountable, so who is liable?
I can vaguely recall a company that was initially all in and then they pulled out. Oh, here it is:

@ptesarik @larsmb @trochee And I agree. If company gives out bad advice, they should be responsible. It is scary how little warnings are on chatgpt, for example. And this will only get _worse_ as bots get better. I wonder how many people got hurt because of that ("pizza with glue"?) and how many will...
