Posts about medicinal herbs hardly ever include the side effects or any negative reactions. It's always, "drink chamomile tea to relax and sleep" and not, "15-20% of people are allergic to ragweeds, which includes chamomile, so it might give you a scratchy throat."

-Drinking mint tea regularly can cause acid reflux and exacerbate other GI issues.

-St. John's Wort calms you, and is good for depression, but it can also dangerously lower your heart rate if you take beta blockers.

-Sure, fennel is great for "digestive issues," but don't schedule a date that night, you will be very gassy.

-All members of the Poplar family, which includes Willow, contain the same chemical as modern aspirin within their bark. Don't give it to your kid if they have the flu or chicken pox, it can cause a deadly reaction.

-Rosehip helps with painful menstruation, and is a great source of vitamin C. So great, in fact, that you can overdose and give yourself kidney stones if you take too much.

-Dear white people, taking turmeric every day will literally turn you orange.

@Cat_LeFey I just want to take a moment to thank you for this post. I always think I’m pretty sharp, and then I get a little knowledge booster that lets me know I am not. I think living in FloriDuh is dulling me. I was just chiding my partner for eating a crap ton of carrots, meanwhile I’m over here popping a turmeric bomb every morning.

nothing wrong in itself with being a bit orange !but! if you’re eating enough turmeric/carotene that your body is storing so much of it that you can see the color through your skin it’s probably more than you needed and a bit hard on some filtering tissue somewhere, yes?

this is a guess and I’m hoping someone with knowledge will correct me

@clew @CompletelyRatchet @Cat_LeFey I was gonna say I absolutely turned my pasty self gold plowing through several servings of baby carrots like popcorn after school every day in high school. No other ill effects but for my foundation to be the wrong color and dialed it back. It'd have to go pretty far to be a problem, but it shows up in your hands....

@cwicseolfor @clew @CompletelyRatchet @Cat_LeFey My son has extremely limited acceptable food and drink choices (because of autism-related sensory issues); carrot juice is the main cold drink, and peppermint tea the hot drink. So yes, he's pretty orange, especially in hands and feet, but that's just going to have to happen until we find another cold drink he likes. And he does have reflux, but the same story. 😕

@spiegelmama @cwicseolfor @clew @CompletelyRatchet @Cat_LeFey My mother in law started giving my son prune juice when he was about 3 to help with constipation issues. Guess what became (and still is) his cold drink of choice?! 🫠

@Cat_LeFey So many people think that herbs are less powerful than medicin, even though they were medicin for thousands of years. It's silly.

@ElementalEcho @Cat_LeFey i'm under the impression that in the mind of a lot of people they are powerful, but have no bad side effects, as they are "natural".

@Cat_LeFey Source for that vitamin C overdose? IIRC Vitamin C is safe in doses such as 1gram/day, and being acid, you can taste it => it is quite hard to overdose.
