@deathmist and I are working on something special, and I would like to invite you to join the effort:
https://gitlab.com/ubports/porting/community-ports/android13/google-eos/google-eos
This is a repository containing build files to create a bootable image for the Pixel Watch 2 and 2 LTE.
Yes, Ubuntu Touch on a Smartwatch.
Since this is uncharted territory on the Lomiri side, I would appreciate input from you, directly here in the comments, what you'd like to see and how you would like to help.
@deathmist and if you read this and think "that sounds like a big effort woah", that's because it is. And every helping hand is appreciated.
And if you ask nicely/there is enough interest, we will make a Telegram channel available to chat about it.
@fredldotme @deathmist - while I think it's awesome to see UT ported to more and different devices, but I do have to wonder why not just contribute to AsteroidOS, which is fully optimized for smart watches already, AND that syncs very well with UT devices via the Amazefish app. I believe the AOS folks have the start of a port for the Pixel watches, but have come across some barriers they could use some assistance with.
@TotalSonic asteroid are not using Halium and are therefor stuck in a limit of an old Android generation. Also, we are talking about a new member in the convergence family.
We would contribute our changes to AsteroidOS repos but will definitely use a similar software stack.
@fredldotme @TotalSonic Better help them support Halium then (they already use libhybris at least)! Or even better, use mainline!
@bart @fredldotme -mainline usually doesn't work well for smart watches, because there really isn't good support for all the different device drivers needed upstream.
@TotalSonic @fredldotme There are at least 2 watches (perhaps more that I don't know of) that partially run on mainline Linux, including the one I own (but is broken) LG G Watch R (lg-lenok). That's not much yes but they exist and it's worth fighting for and supporting, just like #postmarketOS already does on phones.
@fredldotme @TotalSonic wait asteroid is just rawdogging linux on the android kernel?? how do they do gpu?
@bart @fredldotme - ... and frankly, for my own personal use, I don't really give a darn what kernel my smart watch is running, I just want a functional, reliable, privacy respecting, and smoothly operating os on it. And Asteroid OS gives that.
@TotalSonic @fredldotme That's fine for you, but you're clearly not the one responsible for keeping your software usable on the device (and others) for years and years.
I, and others, _do_ want a mainline kernel, and although it's a lot of work to get there it's objectively better to have a mainline kernel vs having a downstream kernel with hacks like libhybris.
AsteroidOS itself is a great OS, and it would be even better with mainline.
@pavel @bart @fredldotme - Pebble is a good option as well. I've got 4 different smart watches (all acquired second hand for less than $80 USd each) here running Asteroid OS, there was a period a couple years ago where I was shopping addicted to getting them in, flashing them, and then buying different bands for them as well.
