q: Does anyone have any advice on how to keep safe in the event of a dog attack?

f you can, teaching the horse to face the dog worked well for us 99% of time. Dogs eventually realize that horse a) has bigger teeth and b) is not running away.
The remaining 1% was a (pitbull) dog that wanted to play, and horse going straight at him did not scare him off. I was afraid that horse would harm him in self-defence, so I just jumped on him and grabbed his collar. Dog wanted to play, and this was suprising enough to stop the conflict.

[Some people carry gun or pepper spray.]
