🎓💪CS Prof Lance Fortnow showing how to fight back

"Don't preemptively change your policies and your values. Too many universities are abandoning DEI, changing their curriculum, freezing hiring of faculty and students, in anticipation of challenges to come. […] participate in Stand Up for Science, reach out to our representatives at the national & state level, and just be part of the resistance. We can't let bullies dictate our future, we must control it for ourselves. ”

Principled and courageous words from Math Professor Peter Woit in the wake of the University's burial of academic freedom.

“they appear to have decided to not support Mahmoud Khalil or other university community members facing imprisonment and deportation"

"As Fascism takes over US institutions, the one thing I’m seeing almost nowhere is principled or courageous resistance.”

"International scholars can now be handcuffed, deported, and even placed in indefinite confinement for pretty much any reason—including long-ago speeding tickets—or no reason at all. The resulting fear has paralyzed, in a matter of months, an American scientific juggernaut that took a century to build.”

Harvard International Students speak up about being “caught in a battle between the White House and Harvard”

"In Trump’s world, there is no such thing as an independent institution. To this end, he is using us international students as poker chips in this authoritarian game. He is trying to pressure Harvard by putting our futures at risk.”

Coercing EU Citizens to make social media profiles public must be some violation of the data protection rights.

“all applicants for F, M and J non-immigrant visas will be asked to adjust the privacy settings on all their social media profiles to ‘public’”

@fj @edps @noybeu

All rights have exceptions. Entry into the country is an exception to many rights and agreements for non-citizens.

I'm relatively certain that any US/EU data protection agreement does not cover EU citizens when they are in the US or seeking entry.

@fj @noybeu We need some kind of international agreement saying that people have right to travel, and set some reasonable standards. "You are trying to enter country, so you have no rights, and we can demand whatever" is just not ok :-(.
