Linus today on LKML:

"""

Google "friendly ribbing".
"""

@kernellogger I did actually try, and I found this Reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/CharacterRant/comments/y1iqpb/i_hate_it_when_toxic_behavior_from_friends_is/
Now, I'm thinking hard.
What is friendly ribbing and what is toxic behaviour? Any ideas, @ljs?

@ptesarik @ljs yeah, it's complicated.

I once called somebody in tweet "totally stupid" (or something like that).

I from my POV thought I had made it totally obvious that I was talking about myself in a self-deprecating manner; but at least one person did not get it[1] and called me out as being toxic in a reply. 😀 Maybe there were more that didn't reply and just put a stamp on me.

[1] guess the brain immediately went into one direction without re-thinking about it after choosing it, which happens to all of us sometimes…

@ljs who's an idiot, you bulky bag of toxic waste? 🤣
@kernellogger
(waiting to see how many people block me for this toot; it totally has the potential to be misunderstood)

@ptesarik @kernellogger @ljs Linus and Dave have known each-other for decades and their relationship has a much deeper context than their exchange on the mailing lists. Within that context, Linus's comment is entirely within the boundaries of their friendly relationship. Outside of that context, Linus's remark could be seen as hurtful, but it really isn't. This is the reason some people use tone indicator markers, but it's definitely not a universal habit.
