karlauerbach@sfba.social@corbet I have long (decades upon decades) argued that ICANN's domain name registration term policies have led to this kind of situation.
Presently, yearly rent must be paid on domain names - with a maximum term usually of about ten years. Fail to pay and the domain name goes back into the available rental pool.
That does not work well for anyone who plans on being around for a longer time - which is most businesses, many institutions, and a lot of private resources that have proven their value to the community.
I've argued for longer terms - say 100 years - or even permanent (see my mental-experiment about this that uses certificate methods rather than periodic rent to express and exercise control (see the link below.)
