would people be interested in buying devices directly from #postmarketOS or having pmOS pre flashed by OEMs?
there are a couple organizational issues publicly available: https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/operations/-/issues
pmOS is reaching out to OEMs, but i wonder if people would also be open to buying slightly older devices that are pre flashed. are there any entities that can help mainline a device if paid?
everything is up in the air, but there is interest within pmOS
thoughts?
@Logical_Error I would absolutely be willing to buy new devices with pmOS pre-flashed (though I'd probably reflash them with edge anyways). I don't think I would buy a pre-flashed used device only because I am knowledgeable enough to do it myself, unless pmOS had guaranteed quality units/new old stock/reputably refurbished devices. Trying to buy used phones you can get wildly varying condition devices which may or may not last.
@Logical_Error Additionally, if they offered a warranty on their pre-flashed older devices that would be a compelling reason to buy. I bought a used OnePlus 6 a few months ago to use postmarketOS and it worked fine for a month before the motherboard died and then I had to buy another one (this time a broken screen unit) to pull its motherboard from to repair the first one.
@Logical_Error Personally I don’t care about pre-flashed, but buying a device where I can rely on good Linux support would be extremely interesting if/when I need a replacement.
@CalcProgrammer1 @Logical_Error I think the primary motivation would be for folks who aren't so confident flashing themselves and/or want to also give some money to the cause.
personally I think the complexity of setting up all the infrastructure to do this ourselves is way too high, but collaborating with phone repair organisations is something I'd be interested in -- there are several just in berlin who sell devices with lineageOS or grapheneOS pre-flashed. If such a company were interested in working with us to pre-flash pmOS and donate some of the profit to us i think it would be interesting.
but we would need to be aligned with them on the long-term goals of this effort to actually make pmOS usable, so i would even advocate for raising the price even though the experience would be worse as a way to raise money to fund development work and make sure customers know what they're in for (since many may not be familiar with the project).
I would also feel much more comfortable once we have hardware testing set up and we're shipping immutable images with factory reset support and other recovery mechanisms (e.g. in U-Boot)
heyo so ive found a couple of suppliers that bulk sell community devices
https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/operations/-/issues/6#note_499846
itd be great if fedi people can find some more suppliers or can verify if these are reputable :3

also, our goal has been set a bit more modestly. will people still be willing to buy community devices from pmOS as is? most likely preflashed?
we might look into turning one of the popular community devices we sell into a main device (again everything up in the air)
