I'm teaching scouts Morse code at our next meeting, so I'm trying to relearn all the mnemonics in English. And, boy, apparently something you've learned as a 12-year old is really hard to get out of your brain. I'm afraid I will forever have to back-translate "Щ" into "Q".

@monsieuricon When you say "mnemonics" do you mean "memory devices" or just the represented symbol?

@mcdanlj I was taught via memory phrases (BOB-is-the-man, GOD-SAVE-the-QUEEN, etc). They were standardized in USSR but I see that English doesn't really have a standard set.

@monsieuricon ah if they really want to learn Morse, better practice is not to use the mnemonic devices. Do you know about Koch and Farnsworth? There's been a lot of progress on how to learn Morse. I failed to learn it as a 12yo, which was why I didn't become a ham then. It took about forty years for me to try again. Using modern methods I overcame my failure. Now I use Morse almost exclusively...

@mcdanlj the goal is not to learn how to ham, though. The goal is to assist recall when you happen to need to use Morse code years or decades later. Mnemonics is superior for this purpose.

@monsieuricon Ok. I was aware of the ham radio badge and Jamboree on the air:

Thus the thought that some of them might have this interest. 🙂
