I do wonder how many people are going to go back (or for the first time) to IRC over the current Discord fuckup. It certainly doesn't cover all the use cases, but one off-ramp on the cycle of "IRC -> IRC but with some things fixed -> Enshitification -> Next IRC but some things fixed" is to just go back to IRC. Some of those things are fixed if you just don't go back to EFNet ;)

@trini I was thinking something like that as well. Is IRC gonna have a resurgence?

@trini IRCv3 = bolt a bunch of stuff on to the IRC spec that XMPP has had for years but nobody has actually built into software yet. (Sorry, this brought me back to a thread from earlier today and it has me kinda ranty.)

@nivex Yeah, heck, maybe people will use XMPP more too. One related thing I was thinking about is that today it's a whole lot easier for residential connections to have a crapload of bandwidth than it was even 5-6 years ago. So solving 2-5 people video/audio chat, without a big company centralized server is more feasible too. And yes, more broad ipv6 support would be helpful as well :)
