Thinking about how Outer Wilds didn't get the attention it deserved from the public because it came out the same year as the much more well-known The Outer Worlds, which confused a lot of people (myself included). And that's really a shame because the two don't have anything in common besides being space games with similar titles. The Outer Worlds is a disappointingly-average Western RPG from the folks that made Fallout: New Vegas. Outer Wilds is an exploration-based puzzle adventure, and a once-in-a-generation classic of the medium that artists, writers, game designers, and composers will still be citing as an influence 50 years from now.
So yeah if you skipped Outer Wilds because you confused it with The Outer Worlds and thought you'd already heard of it and evaluated it or even played it, consider this your official push to go play it immediately.
Obsidian has actually been a mixed bag as a studio. All their attempts at being Bethesda But Good have been really disappointing but they also produced the excellent Pentiment. Microsoft is probably to blame.
@stellarskylark Totally agree! Outer wilds was meh, and outer worlds is one of the best games I've ever played. It is an experience, which isn't for everyone, and some of the puzzles are quite tough.
@jwrm22 @stellarskylark it seems you mixed up the titles there? just to be sure
@stellarskylark 'Outer Wilds' is an excellent game, but I admit it is not for everybody. From the finicky controls to the cycle playing cycle, there are parts of the game that may cause people who are not that into the themes and the contextual narrative of the game to find it frustrating. I will say, though, that it may well be the best Sci-Fi game out there.
@stellarskylark I recommend Outer Wilds to a lot of people, but sadly it is too mechanically complex for a lot of folks I know who would enjoy the mystery and themes
@stellarskylark while I agree that marketing teams failed utterly here, the outer worlds is one of the most fun exploration shooters I've ever played. It had a lot of heart and some really interesting scenarios. To each their own of course.
