Today I found out (the hard way) you can only shoot old Sigmas wide open on newer Canons unless you chip them to translate the aperture command
Anyway, bugs!

The 55-250 was out too, just didn't see many birbs, even fewer who wanted to sit idle. Here's one though.

@bazkie
It's almost like having a Proper Camera with Proper Lenses lets you do things that a phone just can't. :D

@bazkie
Thank you!
Also can't beat good autofocus and other fancy modern aids. (Cropping the bird out in some way is all me though. Rawtherapee does not exactly have an AI crop decider, and if it did, I would not use it.)

@ozzelot what do you mean cropping out? was there some object behind it?

@bazkie
No, it was just a bit far and you'd have to zoom in somewhat to see it in a pic of mostly sky. :D

@ozzelot @bazkie I'm actually looking for proper camera with proper lenses running proper software. That's ... something opensource.

Is there something I should be looking for?

@pavel
I mean, there are open mods on top of very closed firmwares, such as Magic Lantern or... that's the only one I know...

I am unaware of any fully FOSS cameras.

@bazkie It's basically what I mean when I say "your lens is never long enough when you photograph birds" :D
Resolution plays a role then - on an 18 megapixel sensor, this cropped photo is still around 5 megapixels, which is not too shabby. One could print that in a decent size, I hear. (Not that I'm gonna.)

@ozzelot @bazkie Too bad. Librem 5 is nice for development, but DSLR would be way cooler.

@pavel
Some of Sony's and Samsung's offerings were Android-based. I don't know how well documented those are, development-wise.

@ozzelot @bazkie

I have come to this conclusion as well 🤓 but I would caveat that there are some things a modern phone camera probably does better.. or at least more easily.

And the best camera is always the one you have with you...

But macros, wildlife, birds.. you can't beat a "real" lens.

I'm currently alternating between my phone, a dSLR with 100mm macro lens and a dedicated colour/IR camera. But I suspect that it's only a matter of time before I get a telephoto lens out again.

@ozzelot @bazkie

Well that mostly depends on whether I can still lift it! But I guess we'll find out at some point.
