For everyone relying on the softISP for camera support[1] and experiencing camera freezes during video calls in browsers: a fix[2] for a very common issue has now landed in and is already shipping nightly as well stable FF packages in 44 and edge.

So if you previously couldn't do e.g. calls - now you probably can.

You'll likely still not be fully pleased by the image quality, however the recently released 0.7.2 also brought a bunch of improvements for sensor tuning, allowing you to e.g. create color correction matrices for your specific sensor in the tuning file.

Upstream does not *yet* ship any tuning files for the softISP, however if you want to play around, you can take a look at what already ships downstream: https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/tree/main/temp/libcamera

@rmader I don't believe libcamera supports autofocus at the moment, which is probably show-stopper.

@pavel Missing autofocus is indeed still an issue and I hope we can finally make progress on that in the coming months. That being said: a lot of front cameras have a fixed focus (i.e. don't need autofocus).
So on the mobile devices I have, such as the Pixel3a and FairPhone5, this isn't an issue at all - same for various laptops AFAIK.

The OnePlus6 will hopefully also join the ranks as somebody figured out a fix (not yet posted) for the front camera, which until now was just grey.

@rmader @pavel On Fairphone 5 just the front cam doesn't have an actuator, the rear main and UW cams both have a lens focus actuator
