Almost 2024 but why is Lunduke suddenly relevant again 🤦🏾‍♂️

@pundir

wondered that myself as well; both things I saw where texts from Lunduke that looked closer at what some entity (to be precise: LF & mozilla) spends its money on.

Makes me wonder: is maybe nobody else doing that? And if so: for good or bad reasons?

@kernellogger @pundir dunno Mozilla, but LF is an association of corporations, so basically who cares, except the name which might be misleading (I hope nobody donates to it individually).

@vbabka @pundir

well, yeah, but OTOH it seems a lot of people don't know about that stuff WRT to the LF, so I guess for a lot of people headlines like "LF spends only <small number> percent of their money on Linux" are interesting and worth sharing.

@kernellogger @vbabka Honestly I'm more worried about giving relevance to Lunduke again. I thought we were done with him and left him behind on the bird site.

well, I guess it's just a combination of "not everybody got the news (and some people might have forgotten about it or didn't notice what side the story came from)" in combination with "he did something that nobody else does that looks interesting" that made posts to his site show up here.

@kernellogger @pundir @vbabka I've seen (reputable) claims debunking his article back when it came out, something like he's conflating the non-profit mozilla foundation with the for-profit corporation.

honestly i don't care to even pay attention, he's a total lunatic hiding under the guise of civility - I won't be falling for it

Ahh, I suspected something like that, thx for mentioning it.

Makes me wonder if there are similar problems for the LF text (didn't bother to check it out), as that sounds a lot like there is an interesting story there somewhere (disclaimer/reminder: I used to be editor and writer). But I suspect there are similar problems; nevertheless at the same time I wonder if that story is to hot for some media outlets, as they might not want to burn their relation to the LF.

@kernellogger @cas @pundir @vbabka Having worked at Linaro (which is structurally quite similar to LF), the claims seem bullshit to me based on a quick peek at the annual report. They appear to be based on a specific expense head (Linux kernel support) mentioned at the end of the report and then some numbers conjured up from the text.

@siddhesh_p @cas @pundir @vbabka

ahh, thx for that evaluation!

/me still wonders if the structure is really similar enough, as the LF has some interesting characteristics – for example like calling yourself LF while at the same time helping the development of kernels that some might see as competing with Linux[1]
/me thinks "whatever"

[1] don't worry, I know the reason for this and think it's fine that way, it's not meant as a complaint

@kernellogger @cas @pundir @vbabka yeah maybe one could reasonably crib about the name (and there's an unfortunate aspect of modern day capitalism that makes all such specific names inaccurate), but that article wasn't just doing that, IMO it intends to deliberately lead readers into believing that LF is redirecting efforts towards technologies that his reader base sees as being bad bad things.
