Mmh, das ist alte Internet-Folklore. Ich kenne das aus Usenet-Zeiten vor 25+ Jahren.
Neben Layer-8-Problem kenne ich auch noch "Fehler 40": Der Fehler sitzt 40 cm vor dem Gerät.

Fehler 40 war mir jetzt auch neu; die anderen beiden waren mir sehr wohl geläufig, aber PEBKAC hab ich in letzter Zeit auch selten gehört…

But well, whatever: I guess you are the best to decide if it's worth risking. Sometime docs describe something nobody does in practice; *if* that's the case (I doubt it is) it might be worth trying to change things and see if somebody complains (related: https://docs.kernel.org/process/handling-regressions.html#how-to-deal-with-changes-where-a-risk-of-regression-is-known ).
