Oops just discovered that our dryer vent was painted shut by virtue of our upstairs neighbour letting us know that their floor above our dryer was warm and damp and welp that's probably been the situation for the past three and a half years

@mjg59 time to get a heat pump based one?

@vbabka The dryer is fine, and even a heat pump dryer needs to put the moisture somewhere?

(Update: I have been informed that heat pump dryers typically condense the evaporate, so would actually sidestep the problem I'm facing, woo!)

@mjg59 @vbabka heat pump dryers tend to condense the moisture and either dump it in the drain like a washing machine or into a condensate container

@mjg59 @vbabka Heat pump dryers are ventless. They put the moisture in a container for you, or down the same drain as your washing machine.

That said, if your dryer is working fine you shouldn't feel a need to replace it, the environmental cost of making a new appliance is significant. My dryer broke, so I get to replace it with a heat pump model.

@mjg59 @vbabka yeah but they also just don't dry very well. If you have access to a vent you should use it

But also, the bad news is dryer vents should be cleared of lint regularly. Lint in dryer hoses is a fire hazard.

@stark @mjg59 yeah was mentioning it in case access to a (unobstructed) vent can't be restored. Seems it might be nontrivial if there's a floor (huh) now blocking it.

@stark @mjg59 as for "dry very well" I don't have a comparison but ours will run for 4.5) hours when fully loaded (9kg of clothes or something) and the result is very dry.
