When people tell you self driving cars are safe in 99% of situations, remember that I can sell you a carbon monoxide detector that works in 99% of real-world situations consisting of a piece of paper saying 'you're fine bro'

@ljs sort of the opposite of “a broken clock is right twice a day” isn’t it 🤔

@litherum people are too used to software domains where failure is trivial. Safety-critical systems are the diametric opposite.

The fact that tech immediately dived into applying techniques that inevitably by their nature have infinite long-tail failure cases and no way of avoiding them to a safety-critical system shows how morally bankrupt or stupid (possibly both) the whole industry is.

@ljs @litherum it's disregard for ethics, yeah.

it's not a lack of intelligence. more a lack of wisdom, if you want to see it that way.

@irenes @litherum sometimes the most intelligent people can be the easiest to trip up, this whole thing is a bit like a trap for smart people. Humility and skeptiicism is the antidote

@ljs when I was a kid I thought there would be flying self driving cars by now. I love the idea. But there is absolutely no way I'd ever use one right now.
