RISC-V (for non-embedded) has an Itanium-sized gap between fast hardware availability and support

That's... not great and shows that there's a lot of hype compared to reality for now

@never_released are you suggesting that hardware is there but software support isn't?

@never_released the "year of risc-v on the desktop" crowd has been so so sure that competitive chips are right around the corner for what, 5? 10?? years now?

@valpackett @never_released Apparently fast CPUs are hard :-). But x86 is misdesigned and proprietary, ARM is little better but not great and you still have to pay royalties... I believe we'll eventually get fast RISC-V cpus. But we may get fusion, first :-).

@valpackett @never_released Actually... RISC-V is now competitive to Thinkpad X220. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSKA6thLI1U That should be good enough for normal use. CPUs are easier than I thought :-).
