FWIW. I've made a couple of essentially duplicate postings across X and Fediverse recently for testing purposes.

Conclusion: I'm pretty sure that engagement on RF/Microwave/Amateur Radio is better here now, and also that there are many more bots on X than real people. I also suspect that followers on X are not seeing much from regular users. Infosec seems reasonably strong in the Fediverse.

There is still a lack of critical mass here in many areas, which is unfortunate. X is close to dead for normal people, but many are still primarily or only present there.

I'm not seeing anything worthwhile on bsky or threads.

What are others seeing re. social media trends? Are blogs making a comeback?

@kees @jmorris I wouldn't discount bsky yet -- it's a more promising protocol than activitypub. I expect that, at some point, there will be bridging between the two.

@monsieuricon @kees @jmorris Even if bsky is a great platform, I just don't have the appetite for getting involved with another centralized platform.

@jbowen @kees @jmorris but it's not centralized -- atproto is designed to be federated and actively addresses some of the builtin faults of activitypub (such as being able to move your full history over when moving servers, being dramatically less chatty, etc).

@jmorris for all the geeky/techy stuff fedi is great, unfortunately local journalists, politicians and activists pretty much are all still on the bird site as of now, and seems unlikely to change until it collapses completely - which can't be that far away in the future with the way it's going, tbf

@monsieuricon @kees @jmorris So would I be able to host my own node/server/whatever the unit is called?

@jbowen @kees @jmorris Yes, though for the moment they discourage it until the underlying protocol is mature and stops rapidly evolving in backwards-incompatible ways. See https://atproto.com/ for details.

@monsieuricon @kees @jmorris Interesting. Thank you very much for the information. I'll keep a closer eye on it, then.

I had it in my mind as a twitter clone that would maybe have some fedi bits tacked for nerd points.
