@rw "deterministic" is a stretch for Debian. You either rely on the apt cache returning still-available package versions, or need to update it and then it's not really reproducible builds anymore. I'm assuming this is where aptly comes in.
There's also something that people forget... you can do both. Debian is extremely convenient for bring-ups and the HW engineers I work with much prefer using that over figuring out how to use Yocto. I prefer something reproducible for which I don't need to guess what the user did on their system, it simplifies support.
