Finally completed the initial version of 'fp_util', which allows you to control & monitor an Eltek Flatpack2 power supply, using an Arduino with a CAN bus shield.

https://github.com/xjamesmorris/fp_util

These PSUs are intended for telecoms racks, as chargers for 48v batteries, and supply 2kW or 3kW. Surplus units are useful for LDMOS RF amplifiers, and EV / e-bike etc. battery charging.

Or to put it another way, no one remembers what a profound clarification it was when Unix used the idea of typeless files and the uniformity of access that resulted.

@Geojoek yep, I was thinking oil might be able to sustain a higher temperature than 100C. It can, but not by much. This also doesn't need to be an insulator, of course (unlike an RF load).

Load testing my 50v power supply project, using a cheap hot water heater element in water (briefly, < 1 min). Dissipates about 350W. I’m thinking about mounting it into an empty paint can which can hold several gallons. Anyone know if mineral oil would be better than water for this?

@stgraber Great to see! Did @LWN or anyone in the media pick up on what happened at Canonical?

Bonus points for identifying the author of the code. Hint: his initials are LT.

Wrong answers only: what does this kernel code do?

struct file *file = (struct file *)(v & ~3);

FWIW, I’ve since learned that the patterns covering the polar areas indicate Polar Cap Absorption (PCA).

Anyone else NOT planning to go see Oppenheimer? The more hype a movie has, the less I feel like watching it, especially anything science-y.

For those who’ve seen it already: is it worth seeing in the cinema?

@robotfactory @kb9ens Fan dipoles are great, and used by professional / military all the time. I don't know if a vertical will perform as well without serious investment in radials. Also, you can get an LDG autotuner new for under $200, and if you place it as close to the feed point as possible, a single dipole or inverted L will work wonders.

@adafruit I didn't know I needed one of these, but it seems I do now.

@em_7dice Good luck. Hiring is tough right now, but I'm sure you'll find something soon. Running a home lab & publishing your projects is the way to go in terms of demonstrating your skills.
