Random first trial post: today, March 14th, is the 29th anniversary of the Linux 1.0 announcement.
Of course, there are other arguably more important dates in Linux history, but this is one of them.
@torvalds you're on Mastodon now? Attached image is my reaction.

@torvalds Torvalds on the fediverse
What da Torvalds doin
@torvalds Thank you so much for providing the world with such a fantastic operating system!
@orowith2os @torvalds Probably writing a stupid microblog tracker that will be used by everyone in a few weeks ;).
@torvalds i never noticed Linux 1.0 coincided with Pi Day!
Seems Linus is on masto for real (the instance for kernel devs) Let's see if he gets 'moderated' 😂
'torvalds@social.kernel.org'
@torvalds i love you linus torvalds thank you for creating linux
@torvalds Welcome to the #Fediverse, had not seen the server social.kernel.org before but it looks like a great community!
@torvalds From the Random Guy on the internet. We met briefly at your talk at the University of New Hampshire here in the US in the mid-90s when 1.0 for Alpha rolled out. I lost my signed CD of that distro, and regret losing it to this day :-)
It would be interesting to investigate how the very first version of Linux could be reproduced and bootstrapped without Linux itself and without any closed source software like UNIX from the past.
@vbabka @torvalds @psymar Thanks for the update! Don't forget to update the documentation, too: https://korg.docs.kernel.org/social.html
@torvalds welcome Linus! Please provide us some proof that it's really you 😅
@torvalds Welcome to the fediverse! After a long hiatus after the Google+ shutdown, you are back online. Glad you aren’t using Mastodon.
@torvalds Oh my, do I remember the a.out days before ELF libraries and multicore support.
@torvalds I had to look at this post a few times to realize Linus is actually on the cativerse
@torvalds Your server name is priceless. Welcome to the fediverse!
@torvalds There are arguably more important dates in Linux history, such as September 27, 1983
@SuperDicq @torvalds Linux was not even out in 1983 when RMS wrote his open letter.
@torvalds hello, welcome, and thank you for Linux. We owe you a lot.
@torvalds Welcome to the Fediverse!
social.kernel.org, no way!
@torvalds
This is really Linus Torvalds. I'm pleasure meet you. I want to speak with you but I imagine you won't have time. So here is my points.
1. Thank for making freedom for humankind. We don't want total slavery. No Microsoft.
2. Why kernel, on smartphone can't be updated. My mother has ZTE blade a610 mediatek and it use 3.x kernel so I can't upstream it to lates android. My mother is house cleaner and she gain 10 euros hour part 1
@torvalds
So I have to intent go and repair computers and safe money 200 or little more money and buy realme 5 pro. Now officially it supper android 11. But in Google they have android 13 and android 14. It use old kernel too. I can't upstream it too. remember if kernel source is new latest Android is gonna work, there is mediatek who work on latest Android 13. What I want say is. PLEASE make some automatic thing to upgrade part 2
@torvalds
Like peoples that don't have developer skills they kernel. I'm compiling cherish, crdroid and lineage with GitHub help. From one years I'm like 12 hours and more front of laptop to try compile much better stock ROM and it don't work. There is lag. I with help reach 4.9.337 and latest ketnel is 6. On Android 13 there is missing thing in kernel. If you don't believe me look here this is my entire gitlab: https://bgzashtita.es/git/Android-smartphones
Part 3
@torvalds
Take precaution. There is every day poor people's because of FAULT government. There is agenda 2030 and please don't accept it. They try slavery people's. They rey have 5 min city. You can live in like bill gates in 3000 M2. Building but there is peopels who live like us in 60 M2 building. I was abused for being emigrant in Spain I can't work. I know you HATE BULGARIANS. you can't imagine how is to BE POOR. you can comment: this is not my fault. Part 4
@torvalds
Yes this is your fault. You are genius. You know what is gonna happens every day. We poor people's don't have knowledge like you to know what government is doing. I'm calling all hackers to protect us. They try install facial cameras and this is slavery. Remember Linus. You too was young and free, running on streets, jumping, doing every day stuff. People's have rights to be totally free. You can help us everybody. Part 5
@torvalds
Linus you had rights to live, so leave other peoples have the same rights. As for kernel, force mobile company to implement something to can easy upgrade kernel. When I get cherry-pick patch for 4.9.337 wow kernel system UI 4un fast but some times have lags and and much lags. We don't have 300 euros buy every years new smartphone. This is not smartphone this is shit phone. You know better that every new update is better.
Part 6
@torvalds
3. Kernel source for smartphone is NOT CHERRY-PICKED. force móviles company to cherry-pick entire kennel source. I don't have knowledge how to cherry-pick entire kernel source. Because thee was cherry-pick from maybe 7 years old on 4.9.337 SO OLD cherry-pick to fix holes in kernel. Linus... If they don't use it they are breaking entirely LINUX. yes Linux is smartphone too. Where is kernel there is Linux too. Kisses like frien
@torvalds Oh well, hello there! And welcome to the fediverse!

@torvalds #linux 1. Tervetuloa #fediverse en. 2. How do we know it's really you? 3. You need to start using #hashtags
@torvalds Congrats on joining the fediverse, it's amazing to see an instance for kernel developers! 🤯
@torvalds dear Linus, happy to see you in the Fediverse.
I collected the history of Linux and your intellectual challenge with Tanenbaum in this book, released under a CC BY/NC/ND license.
https://archive.org/details/hackerscienziatiepionieri
(There is also an english edition with ISBN 9788184952018 )
I mentioned that just to confirm that Linux history is part of technology history and world history.
My personal and professional life wouldn't have been the same without #Linux, you have my deepest gratitude.
@torvalds
Given a large enough window, you can find something significant about every date!
Welcome!
Welcome Linus.
And thank you so much for everything Linux that you have done. I started using Linux around 2005 and by 2012 it was my only OS on all my computers and still is to this day.
I can't thank you enough for my freedom and my online security abilities that I have learned about from using Linux.
@peterkotrcka @thomas @torvalds if you're using password auth to protect your git repository... you might want to reconsider your choices :)
@torvalds You're a hero and I wish you all the best, assuming of course that this is really you.
@peterkotrcka @thomas @torvalds Respectfully, given that he’s running on an instance on the kernel.org domain, I think that’s pretty definitive. :)
Glad to see you here! I saw you at a talk in San Francisco around the turn of the millennium.
@torvalds I remember that announcement! I remember groaning, "yay, another toy version of Unix like Minix for us to play with," and then griping at you because it was in "C" rather than in some more object-oriented language and was monolithic rather than a microkernel. Interesting how this monolithic kernel has gotten some rather microkernal-ish features over the years ;).
@torvalds any chance you can develop a sane “Twitter” like platform or is that asking too much from humanity?
Hey - welcome to the bright side.
I hope it's you 🤗
@torvalds welcome to the open and decentralized social network - just like Linux, but for social!
@torvalds Greetings. Great to see you in this place of relative sanity.
@torvalds So the US Pi day is actually commemorating Linux 1.0?
Sort of like Christmas being slapped on top of Saturnalia.
@torvalds Hyvää päivänjatkoa Linus. Tervetuloa kerhoon.
Kippis!

@torvalds I never realized that March 14th is a super geeky day, Pi day and Linux's anniversary!
@torvalds oh wow! I remember you announcing this back in the day. It was such a milestone. 29 years! Amazing.
@torvalds
you can either be on the fediverse or productive :-/
@torvalds There is your first Usenet announcement on comp.os.minix on August 25th 1991. This is a date some digital historians consider important.
I don't know of any Usenet servers that hold messages from 1991. The Message-ID I have on my copy is: <1991Aug25.205708.9541@klaava.Helsinki.FI>.
@torvalds Hmm. I started with 0.99pl14. When was that released?
@gnusuario @SuperDicq As an analogy, the Boston Tea Party is considered a key event in US history, even though the US didn’t exist at the time.
@notclacke @SuperDicq Do you mean the Free Software Foundation was important even though Linux Foundation didn't exist at the time?
@gnusuario @notclacke Yes, without the GNU project the Linux project wouldn’t be where it was today.
@SuperDicq @notclacke But that's not Linux history, that's GNU history.
@gnusuario @notclacke @SuperDicq
1994-03-14 was an important day for GNU, as it wouldn't have been what it is today without a readily available kernel with good hardware support.
1989-09-27 was an important day for Linux, as there wouldn't have been a "won't be big or professional like GNU" without GNU.
GNU/Linux history is GNU history.
GNU/Linux history is Linux history.
@torvalds Indeed, not "big and professional like GNU", rather, big and professional IN ITS OWN WAY, and ON ITS OWN MERITS.
The router makers and phone makers could have just gone *BSD (Apple did for MacOS X's userland), but they chose Linux.
I think that says a lot. 🙂
