Incredibly disturbing and sad news about the presidential candidate in Ecuador.
However it does make you reflect on how these gangs are so rich and powerful in the first instance - drug prohibition.
The war on drugs has failed, legalisation across the world would take the power back from drug gangs, allow for far earlier medical intervention for addicts, solve the purity -> OD problem, prices could be kept low to massively reduce criminal activity which funds drug addictions among other advantages.
It's a great example of how prudish ideological positions can cause mass human suffering even when utterly absurd.
