The 4.14.y kernel tree is now end-of-life: https://lore.kernel.org/all/2024011046-ecology-tiptoeing-ce50@gregkh/

It's been a good 6 years, and it was a solid kernel version for its time, but anyone still using it should have moved off it a long time ago as it has been showing its age for quite a while.

@gregkh I got an Android phone recent that is on 4.14. They don’t care enough :( I wish they’d at least give the linux kernel source code too

@Logical_Error What vendor isn't providing kernel source for their phone? I haven't seen that in a long time, except for some China-based non-name ones, and even then it's not too hard to find the source with a bit of searching. Now replacing the kernel on the device is a different story, good luck with that!

@gregkh Two Fortune 500 company's subsidiaries. Cricket (AT&T subsidiary) and Qolsys (JCI subsidiary)

Sent an email long ago for the Linux kernel source code from Qolsys, and got reprimanded at work for doing that (old employer is a partner). Never got the kernel and I'm getting ignored now

Talked to Cricket customer support for the source code, but they didn't know what I was talking about. I left a public question as well (Under Q&A)

@gregkh I emailed sfconservancy and gplviolations about it, but not sure what process it is at

I posted about Qolsys here a long time ago: https://fosstodon.org/@Logical_Error/108488955143808458

I actually got an older phone of mine working! It's actually running mainline linux (not a lot of things work)

Trying to understand why enabling a lot of configs causes a kernel panic (binutils issue?). I'm also trying to understand board files and mainline drivers (maybe rust?). Steep learning curve :P

@gregkh Oh, I forgot to mention that Cricket white labels these two phones, so I tried to get in contact with the manufacturers, but no dice :(

Also when enabling a bunch of configs, the error I get is extremely similar to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNKChxg6tXg

@gregkh @Logical_Error Having kernel sources does not mean bootloader is not locked, for example. We are not protected by GPLv3. List of Android phones usable with custom kernels is not that long, basically OnePlus 6 or Droid 4, see https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices for details.
