Lol I sort of hoped sending an attachment might have worked a little more neatly than it actually did when I sent a 1 meg attachment to LKML...

Starting to warm to the 'fuck email development' stuff a bit now

@ljs The better question is: What 1MB attachments are you sending around? πŸ€” πŸ˜†

@ljs i will jump with joy once we solve federated merge requests w/ migration across forge instances. Would be neat to have the maintainer patch flow model expressed this way.

@cas @ljs storing stuff in git-notes seems like a useful way to hack it in but i agree you'd need to figure out a generalized protocol for federating to diff forges anyway

@ljs i find it amazing that someone involved with kernel development isn't fully boarded on the "fuck email development" train in 2024

e-mail is a fucking nightmare. it's just spam and gmail!

@lkundrak some of the people who whine about it most are extremely obnoxious.

And also there's a few things that's still an issue - email dev makes it so much easier to have actual back and forth _conversations_ vs. a web thing which invites per-line nit-pick.

I also worry that such a public project would get a ton of trolling and idiots posting and messing things up.

Plus relying on some web server somewhere would be inviting DDoS.

Plus you have a bunch of old heads who'll not move over ever...

OTOH it's a total pain in the arse to do it all via mail.

I guess hearing people screeching as if you can just change it all overnight and aren't these kernel people awful gets tiresome.

I mean we know you have a point but how about be civil...

@ljs don't get me wrong, i'm not suggesting a web forge would be better and i think i can fully appreciate the message-based development workflow

it's just that the transport to exchange those messages basically stopped working in most meaningful ways, and all the frogs with 30-year old e-mail setups seem to have boiled without noticing

(i am marginally aware @monsieuricon is doing some work in this area, i'm about to check very soon, hopefully curing some of my yelling-at-cloud-itis)
