Starting to think I will need to send my CPU back to intel under warranty :/

Might be indicative of permanent damage, ffs. Just my luck, worst issues in 10 years and it's the gen I get...

@ljs
My sympathies.
Are there like millions of people in your situation??

I've always been quite dedicated to AMD for CPUs. But I've always gone with Nvidia for GPUs.

I figure "horses for courses".

@dougmerritt yup. Intel are not having their finest moment.

I don't really want to have to send it off and wait however many weeks/months for them to fix it though :/ I have fucking work to do

@ljs
I responded with a joke but on second thought that's too unsympathetic here, so I deleted it.

Nothing good about this situation.

@ljs Is this the hardware problem with 13th and 14th gen that can result in data corruption on disk? I haven't been keeping up that well but heard something about this.

@ljs No surprise.

@thomy2000 well it can result in your cpu being fucked so presumably data corruption too yes

@oleksandr it's like something that hasn't happened in a decade at least so you're wrong to not be surprised bro :P

@ljs @oleksandr but they also haven't made a good CPU in a decade, so...

@vathpela @oleksandr SHUT IT my 14900 is great apart from the hardware failures

@vathpela @oleksandr tbf the MCE triggered but everything worked and my allmodconfig build complete.

Probably with some subtle binary corruption on a staging driver but who cares RIGHT?

@ljs @oleksandr yeah but my threadripper is absolutely amazing.

@vathpela @oleksandr ah you fucker. I wanted a threadripper but it's too expensive :(

@ljs @oleksandr didn't you just get a good job?

@vathpela @oleksandr I got my literal dream job yes.

But I've spent enough bro. I am the most spendthrift person you'll ever meet lol.

Trying to be better trying to save.

Plus this 14900 is pretty decent at kernel building.

I should probably just use some work iron to do builds... but convenient to do locally

@ljs @oleksandr yeah... Tell your new boss to get you a computer that works.

HAMMER SMASHED FILESYSTEM πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

@ljs haha, heard on some gamer channel that intel has some ongoing trouble with manufacturing defects and microcode issues (potentially hw damaging in the long run, because of choosing unreasonably high core voltage)? could it be related?

@ljs i think this is what i've seen about what these overclockers found out. perhaps more to come

@ljs
Thanks. You never know; I piss people off sometimes. Not long ago I made a joke response to our Mastodon server host, mathematician Colin Wright, when he had some system problem and he got quite pissed with me. And I've known *him* since long before any Mastodon servers existed; he invited me here.

Hard to know ahead of time how people will react. At least for clumsy and clueless people like me. πŸ˜‰
