The new rules for cars which require beeps when going over what it guesses (wrongly often) is the speed limit and going over what it guesses (wrongly often) is the lane marker sums up all that is wrong with politician's approach to road safety.

It's basically automated nagging, which has worked brilliantly at convincing shit drivers to not be shit right?

I mean all those times some SUV driving twat has risked my safety that'd definitely be fixed with a beep or something.

Oh and it sums up what's wrong with all the 'magical AI helps drivers' shit.

None of the fucking stuff works 🤣

Clearly designed with Californian highways in mind, boy you should see UK roads, they are NOT the same.

@ljs I did my part to avert this... Apparently not enough.

(participated in the initial trial back in 2005 and answered some questionnaires and told them it's all a bad idea)

@liskin yeah I just have to hold down a button for 5 seconds to turn it off at the start of every drive, which most people are going to fucking do obviously.

It's very stupid really, and of course the technology basically doesn't work.

But politicians and the corporate political types who make decisions on this shit are the easiest to fool with bullshit tech claims.

Ugh...

@ljs the guessing part is actually pretty odd, without augmenting the infrastructure. sounds like someone there joined the 'omg machines appear to be thinking' cult.

otoh if this was reliable, then the when the car detects overspeed, it should require a report and a service visit or disable the car within a week. this would filter out the brains with reward systems unfit for driving a vehicle, and switch the morons to bicycles where we'd welcome them with open arms and skulls 🧠🪓🐟
