@vadorovsky OK, sorry it is a bit "in the close thing" for me ;-) People have strong feelings on the topic and I notice that I easily go on defensive mode or am like "I'm sorry but..."...

@vadorovsky It's actually a bit same with AI and LLM's. I'm not a big fan and thus I hope that people who I personally trust in the tech world would work on the topic. From philosophical perspective, it is sort of "existential standing point". I can easily make deduction that it is most likely not possible to make neither AI nor blockchains go away. Thus, it is better that people who are right side of the history work on those topics.

Maybe less Nazi salutes would help with a more positive turn?

@vadorovsky I.e. I don't think that people suddenly turn into shitcoin fanatics by hearing the word "blockchain". I work on a blockchain technology and still I've never bought a single memecoin. My interest spans from improving that tech to make efficient and more fair resource leasing infrastructures for replacing monolithic services like AWS and Azure. Technology itself is never a devil per se, only how it is applied.

@vadorovsky Disclaimer. I think equally Mitchell still should be allowed to give her speech and don't wish that it is taken down :-) I'm a strong believer of "let the all voices be heard and trust that audience is capable of critical thinking". What kind of tech conference is that if people are easily brainwashed with nonsense?

@vadorovsky I guess nuclear waste is my thing as my past involves e.g. TPM chips and Intel SGX ;-) Where you see rotten tomatoes flying you might see me hacking with my Thinkpad. I guess I like hate 🤷

@vadorovsky If blockchains are a discriminated topic in FOSDEM, then means that I'm also canceled from FOSDEM forever ;-) I work on a bytecode JIT interpreter for blockchain nodes and smart contracts.

@vadorovsky Linux Foundation is a "crypto bro" (whatever that means). So why LF is not canceled from FOSDEM?

... maybe I should use all this cool and ETHICAL AI/LLM tech to make it scavenge me such a list ;-) [I promise not to go this far]

A random pick from this years FOSDEM keynotes.

"What FLOSS Means in the AI World"

https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-5495-what-floss-means-in-the-ai-world/

From description:

'"Mozilla has been doing extensive work in the AI ecosystem by defining a principled approach to AI that prioritizes transparency, ethics, and community-driven innovation."

Some highlights of Mozilla from the past year time window:

1. https://www.techradar.com/computing/cyber-security/mozilla-stands-by-its-controversial-privacy-feature-but-ready-to-clear-up-confusion
2. https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/11/21363424/mozilla-layoffs-quarter-staff-250-people-new-revenue-focus
3. https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/24/mozilla_product_chief_sues_over/
4. https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/18/mozilla_buys_anonym_betting_privacy/

Right but I get it. Mitchell Baker is only an employee with almost eight figure (in 2022 $7 000 000), not evil billionaire, and a true contributor to the open source.

This should highlight how hypocritical the campaign against Jack Dorsey has been.

I would not put high hopes on Mozilla's AI story TBH ;-) 🍿

I cannot even imagine what kind of "best of keynote speakers" list I could collect if I enumerated every keynote speaker from every FOSDEM ever organized...

@matzipan And like being a billionaire alone is not for me personally an attribute that I would construct my opinion on a person solely based on that. I really don't have an opinion of Jack as the only thing I know from the dude is that he is a billionaire, because it is echoed heavily in the social media, thanks to FOSDEM 2025.

@matzipan This is in my eyes like:

1. Billionaires who keep themselves in the closet are fine. They have their messengers at the con.
2. A billionaire who comes with his own face to the con: NOT COOL.

I simply do not digest this logic.

@GoatRoper @ElpasYou_2 @kibcol1049 Have a box of old Russian cigarettes. The ratio of tobacco to length would give you maybe 2 minutes, mostly cardboard tube.

@Foxboron Not meant as argument here and as off-topic as it can ever get, but keynotes is the time when I'm mentally still full-on sleep. No matter what the conference is, there is some "larger than life figure" saying that stuff that does not help me to get on with my life.

Let's just say that I stand in the position that ALL keynotes that I've ever heard in my life did suck, and thus maybe that reason I don't give that much weight to Jack's performance ;-)

I don't even care those Linus' and Dirk chats albeit I respect both (Dirk hired me to Intel so I'm even thankful to him for helping me out when Nokia fell down).

That said, there is one thing I remember Linus saying in LinuxCon EU 2014 that has stuck on me: "If you reach for the starts, you might hit yourself to the moon". That's the only cool thing I've ever heard in any keynote or fireside chat alike session :-)

@Aissen I don't campaign against anyone going to FOSDEM, I did not try deny their right protest.

Still, I see this behavior fake as hell, and despite that we can happily live ever after in this planet, and it is not even seeing these people "fake as hell" ;-)

And if one does a public social media campaign with multiple people putting message out that "Jack Dorsey sucks, let's boycott" and I alone say opposite is that like crime against "open source community".

It's politics...

@Foxboron At least there's one billionaire who comes there with his own face and not with "Microsoft <3 Linux" campaign. I do respect that side too.

@Foxboron Most of those employees contribute the stuff that their billionaire owners indirectly influence them to contribute :-) So that would make FOSDEM billionaire middle-men scam, right?

Seriously, I don't know the history of Jack so it could be that I'm talking about evil person who attended to Diddy parties or something similarly fishy.

It's not my conference and FOSDEM obviously what they want. And people can think what they want on topic. This is just how I see it.
