A gentleman named Paul Khoury approached me about getting a retro computer he'd acquired up and running. The computer is a Sun SPARCstation UPN (1997), a prototype for a super small desktop computer that preceded the Mac mini by about 6-7 years. Only about 20 were ever made. I was the designer on the project and had poured my soul into it, so I was proud to help him get it running. I dug out the schematics from storage and gave any advice I could remember and he got it powered on in a few days.

@g4dbn thanks. Getting some low band (3cm) projects done before heading back up to mm-wave+.

Very excited to have a paper published in DUBUS. I’ve been reading this journal for about a decade and never imagined when I started that I’d be published there. The journal is also translated into German (or English) by the editors, as it’s a dual language publication.

1️⃣5️⃣ Here's the 15th installment of posts highlighting key new features of the upcoming v256 release of systemd.

systemd integrates with many components of the OS. Due to this it links against various external libraries. Generic distributions – which typically enable all features a package provides – usually have to deal with relatively large dependency trees in cases like this.

“Don’t ask me how I did it I just did it it was hard”. J/K, I will document this properly soon and it’s much simpler and than it looks.

@Stormgren @kb6nu yep, check beacons, and wspr, dxmaps etc. seems quiet now. Local VHF groups can be helpful when setting up. The antenna should rx ok-ish on 10m, too.

It feels like cheating to use these pre-cut wire links for soldering (vs. push-in breadboard), but I’m over making these by hand. #amateurradio #hamradio #electronics

@kelvin0mql @vees you need to visit the Australian outback, Milky Way easily visible (much better vantage point) and you can also see the Magellanic Clouds, with the naked eye.

@jarkko I’ve never played with FPGAs, need to fix that at some point. This is possibly very relevant to RF digital, lots of amateurs now using s/w modems via usb sound, but performance is not optimal at high bandwidths. They will struggle to utilise the full potential of the recent FCC changes in the US to increase the data rates allowed on HF.
